A History of Floriography in Funerary Art

Join me at Death Over Drafts on August 3rd for a brief talk on how Floriography and funerary art create unspoken messages for those who’ve died, and then build your own tiny bouquet symbolizing grief, honoring and/or remembrance. This is a free event.

An Introduction to Floriography

In this casual hands on class you’ll learn a general history of Victorian Era phenomenon of Floriography and Tussie Mussies, and then you’ll create your own keepsake arrangement tied with vintage ribbons. I will also demonstrate a variety of ways to arrange, wrap, and preserve your flowers. The floral arrangements are yours to keep and you’ll also receive an information packet which includes: a list of recommended books, a ribbon tying tutorial, a list of easily sourced flowers for a variety of occasions, and a tongue-in-cheek zine detailing how to send a beautiful bouquet filled with hidden insults.

You’ll also have the opportunity to browse and purchase vintage vases and other floral containers. (optional. cash or Venmo only.)

An Introduction to Pressed Flowers

Fresh flowers can be used to create a delightful variety of crafts and keepsakes. I’ll teach you what flowers are best for pressing, the optimal press conditions for blooms and how to craft a simple flower press. From there I will continue with one of these various class options including but not limited to: building your own pocket sized press, creating a bookmark complete with a vintage ribbon for extra flair or making a small botanical work of art using a tiny hanging frame. [All materials are provided.] The finished creation is yours to keep and you’ll also receive an information packet that includes a list of recommended books, a written tutorial on the class option, a list of easily sourced flowers for a variety of occasions, and a ‘how to’ featuring other ways to use your pressed flowers.
